Damon Fowler

NewMusicForOldFolks says …

On a trip full of memorable sets of music, one that sticks in my mind from the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise #30 my wife and I took in February was the late night jam hosted by Southern Hospitality. The group, headed by Victor Wainwright, JP Soars and Damon Fowler, put on an unbelievable show on the back pool deck until the wee hours. The highlight was a 20+ minute jam that I thought sounded like John Coltrane's "Afro Blue." I talked to Soars and he said it was just something that they made up on the spot. Either way it was awesome. Fowler is a great guitar player. His latest effort is The Whiskey Bayou Sessions on Tab Benoit's new label. It's very good. Benoit is putting together a very good stable of artists and reportedly Soars has an album coming out later this year.

Bio (From the artist's website)

On the strength of his hybrid of roots rock, blues, and sacred steel, Florida native Damon Fowler started wowing audiences with his musical exploits as a teenager, building a reputation as one of the hottest young players on the scene. Adding songwriting and vocal skills to his repertoire over the years has brought him many accolades, with critics extolling his originality and maturity as well as his technical guitar expertise. In 2008’s “Best of Tampa” poll, Creative Loafing magazine named him “Best Guitarist… And Slide Guitarist… and Lap Steel Player… And Dobro Player.” Fowler’s guitar work has been compared to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, while his slide guitar has a hint of the late Duane Allman. He can play fiery guitar runs with the best of them, but it’s his lyrical work on lap steel and Dobro that makes him stand out among the legions of guitar heroes. (more)

THE WHISKEY BAYOU SESSIONS (2018): When Tab Benoit decided to begin his own label “Whiskey Bayou Records” Fowler was the first signed to the label. This album recorded at Benoit’s Houma Louisiana studio has been named “The Whiskey Bayou Session.” Benoit plays guitar on three tracks. Fowler co-wrote two songs with his regular writing partner Ed Wright. The opener “It Came Out of Nowhere” is a soulful tune sung by Fowler and it includes a fabulous guitar solo, while Benoit plays rhythm. “Candy” a country styled tune features Benoit on acoustic guitar and the lyric “mama gets all the candy she wants.”
