John Hiatt

NewMusicforOldFolks says …

This is the Godfather of New Music for Old Folks. John Hiatt has been putting out great rock ’n roll and roots music for more than 30 years. The albums don't top the charts and he doesn't play stadiums. John Hiatt is not incredibly rich or famous; he's just really good at his job. If you asked musicians who the best songwriter of the last 30 years is, John Hiatt might win the poll. There's no such thing as a bad Hiatt album. There's just good, really good and "I can't believe you don't own a copy of this." In the third category is 1987's Bring the Family, with Ry Cooder (guitar), Nick Lowe (bass) and Jim Keltner (drums). Perfectly Good Guitar is another personal favorite.

THE TERMS OF MY SURRENDER (2014): Hiatt, a master lyricist and satirical storyteller, weaves hidden plot twists into fictional tales ranging in topics including redemption, relationships, growing older and surrendering, on his terms. The new record is musically rooted in acoustic blues, accentuated by Hiatt s soulful, gritty voice, which mirrors the gravity of his reflective lyrics. For Terms Of My Surrender, Hiatt turned to his longtime guitarist Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin, Jack Ingram) to produce. Though Hiatt initially picked up an electric guitar on day one of recording, Lancio challenged him to play acoustic instead, which set the tone and mood for the whole process. Hiatt even plays harmonica on the album, which he hasn t done in several years. They recorded most of the album off the floor as if in a live setting, which was fitting since the band in the studio was Hiatt s exceptional touring band.
