Alabama Shakes
NewMusicforOldFolks says …
Younger and newer than most of the artists featured on this site, Alabama Shakes still appeals to the sensabilities of those of us who grew up listening to Janis Joplin or Etta James. Singer/guitarist Brittany Howard doesn't have their track records, but she does have their spirit. "Hold On" on their first album is a truly great song and the second album proves that this is a band that's going to be around a while.

Bio (From AllMusic.com)
Muscle Shoals-inspired, Athens, Alabama-based quartet Alabama Shakes formed in 2009 around the talents of Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, Steve Johnson, and Heath Fogg. Originally simply called the Shakes, the band's blend of fiery blues-rock and hard-hitting Southern soul drew comparisons to the Black Keys, Drive-By Truckers, The Detroit Cobras, and even Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. The band released an eponymous debut EP in September 2011, with plans to record a full-length album later in the year. Released on ATO in 2012, Boys & Girls was produced and mixed by the band at the Bomb Shelter in Nashville. (more)

SOUND & COLOR (2015): Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color is the follow-up to the band's Gold-certified debut album, Boys & Girls, which earned the group three Grammy nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist. Sound & Color demonstrates the tremendous strides made by a group of musicians who had only been playing together for a few months when they recorded their first album. From the searing single "Don't Wanna Fight" to the garage-rock freak-out on “The Greatest” to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini,” Alabama Shakes build on the soulful blues-rock base and map a surprising, innovative new direction.
