Debbie Davies

NewMusicforOldFolks says …

When the great Albert Collins takes you under his wing and shows you the ropes, you must have something going on. Debbie Davies and Coco Montoya both spent time playing in Collins' band and each has gone on to a great career since. Davies more than holds her own in the male-dominated Blues guitar world. She can wail with the best of them. Not sure about her thing for hats. But who am I to judge? The new album, Love Spin, is her best in a while.

Bio (From the artist's website)

Debbie Davies is an award-winning singer, songwriter, guitar player of extraordinary talent. A professional musician since the early 1980s, Debbie ranks among the top blues artists in the country. She has received 10 nominations for Blues Music Awards, and in 1997 and 2010 won the award for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist. Davies’ rise to the upper echelon of blues music started at an early age as she absorbed the music heard constantly in her home. Her (professional) musician parents were either sitting at the piano or spinning discs on their turntable, filling the air with the sounds of big band jazz, harmony vocal groups, or the pop icons of the day. But the young Davies was particularly attracted to the bluesier sounds of her father’s Ray Charles records, and by the age of 12 realized that her affinity for an instrument was not for the piano, but for the guitar. LOVE SPIN (2015): Today Debbie Davies is one of the best blues artists in the world. There’s a lot to like on her new release Love Spin; first, the music is sometimes funky, sometimes country influenced, sometimes traditional, but always tight, volcanic, and impressive. Second, the band is red hot. Don Castagno and Wilbo Wright are joined by ace artists Terry Hanck, Dana Robbins, Dave Keyes, Jay Stollman and Scott Spray to back her up and push the music to a higher level on all cuts. Either Davies or Castagno writes the songs, except for two covers. The first, “Talk Real Slow” by Lenny McDaniel, is good and funky, and the second,”A Darker Side of Me” by Swedish blues legend Sven Zetterberg, is jazzier than the original, and it swings in a cool way.
