JJ Grey & Mofro
NewMusicForOldFolks says …
JJ Grey looks like he should be a Country music star. Then take a look at the album cover at the bottom of the profile. It looks like an ad for a hunting lodge. But then Grey's band Mofro starts to play and he opens his mouth to sing and It's pure R&B. It's literally blue-eyed Soul. There's just enough of a back-woods vibe to the music to give JJ Grey & Mofro a unique sound. This is another relatively new discovery for me, but one that I'll definitely be listening to on a regular basis. The new album, Ol' Glory, has guest appearances by Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi All-Stars and Derek Trucks. It's worth multiple listens. I've already added the CD to my Christmas list.

Bio (from the artist's website)
From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. When you see JJ Grey and his band Mofro live—and you truly, absolutely must—the man is fearless. (more)

OL' GLORY (2015): A motley mix of almost everything North America has spawned at handmade music: cool Blues, Classic Rock, Folk, Funk, Gospel and R&B-influences. JJ Grey performs extremely charismatic, and his band Mofro gives the whole with its enormous musical abilities a broad foundation. The album title, Ol' Glory, refer to the myths of the southern states and personally experienced stories. Passion but also heartedness brings JJ Grey with his septet hearing. In the interview the singer and harmonica player admits that this ease had to be worked out until hard. But the good mood, it is then that gives the beautiful harmonies and sometimes a bit quirky Rock ’n Roll-bond the special touches.
