Midnite Disturbers

NewMusicForOldFolks says …

This one's a little different. The Midnite Disturbers are a New Orleans supergroup. With a somewhat rotating group of members, the Disturbers are a brass band made up of members of many other Big Easy bands. Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Big Sam Williams, Shamarr Allen, Skerick, members of Galactic, Bonerama and other New Orleans players are in the lineup. Aside from regular sets at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Disturbers are known to just show up somewhere like Tipitina's or The Maple Leaf and, going on after the headliner, play all night. I saw them at JazzFest and it one of the highlights of the four days of music. Because there are no real recordings, the YouTube video below will have to suffice.

Bio (From Kevin O'Day's website)

The idea for the Midnite Disturbers came at drummer Stanton Moore’s kitchen table. He and fellow drummer Kevin O’Day had been tossing around the idea of forming an all-star brass band, and they had called Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews to see what he thought. When he agreed, they started calling friends and ended up with a lineup including saxophonists Ben Ellman and Skerik, trombonists Big Sam Williams and Mark Mullins, trumpeters Troy Andrews, Jamelle Williams and Shamarr Allen, and sousaphonists Matt Perrine and Kirk Joseph. The band has a hard, funky, in-your face sound with an enthusiastic, throwdown party attitude. Moore explains that this comes from the fact that “everybody is a leader. Anybody can take over at any point and say, ‘I got it.’ There’re a lot of big personalities, but we’re all capable so nobody is really sweating.” (more)

LIVE AT JAZZFEST (2009): There really aren't Midnite Disturbers albums. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival records most of its performances every year and offers them for download. Some are up only for a limited time and others stay on file. You can find Disturbers sets on the site. Other than that, there really no "recordings." Right now only the 2009 set is available through the site. Coincidentally, that was the year I was there. Unbelievable show. Click on the album cover to link to the site.
