Can I go back in time about a month? In December I began to compile the top New Music For Old Folks albums of 2015. It took me a couple of days to whittle the list down to 20 and I put the list on the site with comments on each album. Now it's January and I've stumbled across an album that belongs on the list. Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats debut album is incredibly soulful. It's had to believe its the band's first effort. Word is that Rateliff, who has a couple of albums as an indy singer/songwriter decided that he needed a change of direction and and the direction he chose was bearded, white Otis Redding. I'm not sure which album I would leave off the top 20 list, but this one belongs among the year's best.

When Nathaniel Rateliff went to a writing retreat outside of Tucson, Arizona, for 11 days in the spring of 2017, he didn’t know he was starting his third full-length solo album. He thought he was actually sequestering himself to finish writing the last few songs for Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats’ follow-up album to their self-titled 2015 debut. In Tucson, Rateliff did manage to write the last few songs for what became the Richard Swift-produced Tearing at the Seams. But another song managed to creep in that was unlike any of the one’s he’d composed for the Night Sweats’ second effort, signaling that he had other things he wanted to say. (more)
