Stanton Moore

NewMusicForOldFolks says …

If you're about my age, the debate was always between John Bonham and Neil Peart as to who was the greatest drummer. A little later Carter Beauford from The Dave Matthews Band came along, and I thought he might enter the conversation. Then I heard Stanton Moore. Bonham was all power, Peart was speed, Beauford combines the two. But Moore wins on creativity. The rhythms are all over the place, but still rock solid. Listen to "Tang The Hump" on the Spotify sampler below and you'll see what I mean. Moore plays with New Orleans Funk monsters Galactic, but he also has a couple of side projects. Sometimes called The Stanton Moore Trio and other times just Stanton Moore, his solo work is a great mix of Jazz and New Orleans Funk. The latest album, Conversations, is predominantly the former, Flyin' The Coop is the more the latter. They all mix the two and they're all great.

CONVERSATIONS (2014): Conversations is the first straight jazz date led by drummer Stanton Moore, who is best known as the kit man for NOLA jam-funk powerhouse Galactic. He is no stranger to jazz; he plays it in hybrid form with the Garage a Trois quartet but they play lots of other music too. Here Moore is in the company of two New Orleans jazz veterans: bassist James Singleton and pianist David Torkanowsky.
