Chuck Prophet

NewMusicForOldFolks says …

Chuck Prophet seems like one of those guys I've always been aware of but never really listened to much. That's going to change. Prophet started as a member of the psychedelic ’80s band Red and Green and has worked with everyone from Solomon Burke to Warren Zevon to Alejandro Escovedo. His latest album, Night Surfer, features guitar work from R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. As a singer, Prophet walks the line between Ray Davies of The Kinks and Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. If any of that appeals to you, check him out.

Bio (From the artist's website)

Chuck Prophet shapes his restless career with inimitable subtle flair: a vivid parade of razor-edged one-liners camouflaged in a slack-jawed drawl, songs about heartbreak and everyman heroism, drenched in twisted lines of rude Telecaster. When the early stages of a financial melt-down coincided with a rare San Francisco heat wave in the summer of 2008, with the window open wide and Dwight Twilley, Iggy, Thin Lizzy and the Knack blaring out the hi-fi, Prophet wrote a collection of political songs for non-political people. Later, in April 2009, he journeyed to Mexico City, where, in the clutches of a Swine Flu panic and earthquakes, he recorded ¡Let Freedom Ring!, his most incendiary record, every bit as urgent as the title demands. NIGHT SURFER (2014): Night Surfer, the 13th studio album for acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Chuck Prophet, was released in 2014 on Yep Roc Records. Night Surfer was recorded in Prophet's hometown of San Francisco at Decibelle Recording Studio and in Nashville at Alex the Great with noted producer Brad Jones and was mixed in upstate New York by Paul Q Kolderie. Of the album, Prophet comments, "This record is loosely conceptual but universal all the same. It's all about a path forward, about looking around and imagining where we'll be in 20 years if we just follow that path. And of course, you'll find a persistent anxiety throughout; we live, after all, in anxious times."
