The first thing I read about MonkeyJunk (one word, capital J) described it as a "Canadian swamp Blues band." "That's not a thing," I thought. Actually it seemed like almost a contradiction in terms like "jumbo shrimp" or "compassionate conservative," but they actually seem to pull it off. The Ottowa rockers feature a baritone guitar rather than a bass and a healthy dose of harmonica from lead singer Steve Marriner. Guitar player Tony D. and drummer Matt Sobb round out the trio. The group has one multiple JUNO awards (the Canadian Grammys) and the newest album, Moon Turn Red, is very good. Maybe Canadian swamp Blues actually is a thing.

The 2008 birth of the Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk came along just when music fans needed them the most. They brought an accessible and refreshing blend of swamp-rock roots and blues to the table and haven’t looked back. In the relatively short time they’ve been performing and recording together, the members of MonkeyJunk have won a collective 20 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, a Blues Music Award (USA), and have been nominated twice for a JUNO Award, taking home the coveted hardware in 2012. MOON TURN RED (2015): Moon Turn Red is MonkeyJunk's fourth release, showcasing deep grooves and soulful original material. The Ottawa based trio are Canada's most acclaimed blues/roots music band. They are Juno Award winners and have taken home top honours four times at the Maple Blues Awards. MonkeyJunk's touring schedule regularly includes dates in Europe and major festivals across North America. Guests include David Wilcox in a remake of his hit "Hot Hot Papa" and Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar fame.
