Jane Lee Hooker

NewMusicForOldFolks says …

When it was The Runaways, an all-woman band that could rock was an instant sensation. Now there's no more novelty. We all know women can play and you need to look no further than Jane Lee Hooker for proof. The five New Yorkers all sport nicknames like "Danger," "Cool Whip" and "Hightop" that they probably don't need once you hear them blast away at the Blues. Jane Lee Hooker's debut album, No B!, is all cover songs, but that doesn't really matter as it's all about attitude and volume — and there's plenty of both.

Bio (From the artist's webpage)

Jane Lee Hooker is a band of five women from New York City who infuse the grit and attitude of their hometown into the blues. With double lead guitars, a hard-driving rhythm section, and soul-scouring vocals, JLH honors the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Winter, Big Mama Thornton, and other blues greats. Few bands today deliver the goods with as much raw soul as JLH. (more)

NO B! (2016): It takes nerve to name your group after one of the most revered guitar players in the history of the blues. Most of the time, the five women in this gang of bluesy rockers are up to the task, although they often substitute Hooker’s restrained approach with volume and attitude. Before they began playing as Jane Lee Hooker, they put in time in a number of well-known, hard-to-categorize bands, including Helldorado, Nashville Pussy, The Wives, Spermicide and Bad Wizard. They bring that eclectic approach to the tunes they cover here, drawing influence more from the sounds of Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter than Hooker’s boogie-driven grooves. — Downbeat
